When I was given an old out-of-focus photo of this Metis man, I could see it’s potential as a portrait. Because of his dark complexion I decided to do a drawing and use dark tonal paper. Then I used pencil for the midtones and white charcoal for the highlights. By adding details here and there, it brought him back into focus, even in the memories of the people who knew him.
